Charmed was an iconic show with a devoted following. I have to say I jumped on the train late and only watched the entire series a few years ago but that doesn’t mean I love it any less. My favorite thing about the show has to be the incredible/strange/cleavage baring fashion choices the Halliwell sisters made. So I made a commitment to re-watch the entire series (yes, I suffered through season 8 for this) and make a definitive list of the most bonkers outfits on one of the most beloved shows of the 90s/00s.
S01e20- “The Power of Two
Ah yes, here she is, Prue Halliwell in all her glory. What I like about this outfit is that it’s clearly a normal cardigan. Something any of us would throw on over a t-shirt. The t-shirt seems to be missing in Prue’s interpretation however, as she instead chooses to just button it up over her bare chest.
S02e04 “The Devil’s Music”
Season 2 is really when the show came into its own fashion-wise, due to veteran costume designer Ellish Zabrasky coming on board. This outfit is so iconically 90s, from the crop top to the pants that strongly resemble pajamas. But it’s the upper-arm bracelet that really seals the deal on this ensemble.
S02e08 “P3 H20”
This is apparently what Prue considers work appropriate. It takes a lot of guts to wear a bright red halter top to your job as an art historian. Hilariously, no one makes a single comment about Prue’s completely inappropriate wardrobe. If my boss can’t handle me at my crop top, she doesn’t deserve me at my sensible button down!
S02e09 “Ms. Hellfire”
Prue looks like some kind of crime boss in this outfit and I am here for it. Out here looking like lady Scarface. Where can I get that coat?
S03e06 “Primrose Empath”
Halter tops are a favorite among the Halliwell girls and this one is particularly strange. Pocahontas is clearly the inspiration for this feathered top and blue fringe skirt. I don’t think this is as offensive as going as a native American for Halloween. It is, however, offensive to my eyeballs.
S03e06 “Primrose Empath”
Phoebe is really doing the most here. Combining an embellished skirt with an off the shoulder crop and fishnets is gutsy but it’s the witchy boots that put this ensemble over the top. Hey guys, did you know that Phoebe’s a witch? Check out the boots!
S03ep09 “Coyote Piper”
It was a struggle to include Piper in this list because they really mom-ed her up around season 4. Everyone else is out here all braless this and backless that while she’s wearing a tunic. I did manage to locate this gem in which she is possessed by sexy spirit Terra. There’s also a great Coyote Ugly-style bar dance scene in this episode. Highly recommend.
S03E11- Blinded by the Whitelighter
In this episode, veteran whitelighter Natalie arrives to whip the girls into fighting shape. She specifically tells them there will be no more braless halter tops and heels. Obviously, Prue is just trying to make it clear that she is following the rules.
S03e11 “Blinded by the Whitelighter”
I’m not 100% sure what this is but it appears to be a fuzzy, paisley vest, held together by a safety pin with nothing but a lacy bra underneath. It seems dangerous to wear an outfit featuring so much exposed skin while mixing potions but if there’s one lesson I learned from the Halliwell sisters it’s that cleavage is power.
“Long Live the Queen” S04e19
In this episode, Phoebe becomes queen of the underworld. This seems to be a riff on the paisley vest outfit done in black leather to fit her new persona. This look is very motorcycle club meets Hot Topic circa 2002.
S05e01 “A Witch’s Tail”
The episode where Phoebe becomes a mermaid is one of the best in the series. Is there anything this show loved more than Alyssa Milano’s breasts? I don’t think so.
“Happily Ever After” Season 5 episode 2
I love this outfit so much because it is exactly what Phoebe would wear as a fairytale princess. A matching set complete with gold crop top with gratuitous bow and of course you’ve got to make that skirt a mini. No need to compromise on style just because you’re under a spell that turned you into Cinderella.
S05e05 “Witches in Tights”
This outfit is very early 2000s boho. Even a free spirit needs to bare some cleavage and tummy. To finish off the look, we have a long macramé sweater and a maxi skirt that has splotches of what looks a little like green vomit. Can’t be too hard on her though. I think I saw someone rocking this same ensemble at Coachella.
S05e05 “Witches in Tights”
Who doesn’t love a good superhero costume? These outfits are awesome and I can’t even decide which one I like best. They also kind of look like the girls’ regular clothes reimagined in PVC.
S05e10 “The Importance of Being Pheobe”
Paige makes her entré onto this list in season 5 with a top that resembles a modified garbage bag. I have to give Paige credit here though, she’s way ahead on the upcycled trend.
S05e11 “Centennial Charmed”
This strongly resembles Phoebe’s pajama pants ensemble from season 2. Paige takes it a step further with a super cropped halter and a lovely drawstring to make this look even more #iwokeuplikethis.
S05e13 “Sand Francisco Dreamin'”
Who doesn’t love a good lace up pant? And in a flattering millennial pink? *kisses fingers like an Italian chef* magnificent. Of course, I can’t move on from this outfit without mentioning what would otherwise be a normal turtleneck if it weren’t for the yeti sleeves.
S06e02 “Forget Me… Not”
Have you ever seen an off the shoulder jean jacket? Neither have I! But Phoebe is the queen of serving us looks we’ve never even imagined. Nicely accessorized with white pants and forehead bandaid.
S06e12 “Used Karma”
Pheobe was supposed to be possessed by Mata Hari in this episode but this looks more like a fairy costume from the Halloween store. Or a really elaborate lampshade.
S07e20 “Imaginary Friends”
Finishing off this list with one more Phoebe look. It’s almost a normal shirt but of course, it has to be open at the bottom and have a superfluous fluffy drawstring at the front. Classic Phoebe!
The Halliwells made bold fashion choices that still have us shook 20 years later. The 90s and 00s might be back but there’s no way to top them.
